From Mindoro I was flown back to Leyte and began my trip back to the States. From Tacloban, Leyte I was flown to Guam where I spent the night, to Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, to Johnston Island, to Hickam Field, Hawaiian Islands(where I spent about 5 hrs) and on to Hamilton Field, California. After a few days I was flown to Kennedy Army Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee.

From there I was granted a short pass to go to Meridian and was later sent to the Welch Convalescent Hospital, Daytona Beach, Florida. It was there that I learned of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the end of World War II.

When I was released from Welch, I was given a nice long furlough during which time I returned to Maryville College and sat in some classes, hoping that I would soon be discharged, but I was sent back to duty at Ft. Oglethorpe, Georgia. I "worked" there in the service records division until I had sufficient service points to be discharged. I received my Honorable Discharge on January 10, 1946. As I went though the final line at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, I was given my mustering out pay ($100--total $300), a Purple Heart Medal, and World War II Victory Medal along with my veterans lapel button. I had previously received my "Good Conduct" medal, having served on active duty 2 years, 4 months and 26 days, with 8 months and 4 days of Foreign Service, according to my discharge papers
